Team Spotlight: Meet Our Newest Commercial Property Solicitor at Miller Samuel Hill Brown

As part of our ongoing Team Spotlight series, we are delighted to introduce one of the newest members of our Commercial Property team at Miller Samuel Hill Brown (MSHB), Irum Arshad. We spoke about Irum's journey into law, what inspires her work in commercial property transactions, and her advice for trainees considering a future in commercial property law.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to pursue a career in law?

I studied law at university, and from early on, I was drawn to the mix of problem-solving, communication and client-facing work that the profession offers. During my traineeship, I gained experience across various types of property work, including 6 months in Commercial Property and 6 months in Renewable Energy.

These seats really highlighted how dynamic and varied property law can be — each transaction has its own story, challenges, and practical impact. That combination of technical detail and real-world outcomes is ultimately what led me to pursue a career as a commercial property solicitor.

What excites you most about joining the Commercial Property team at Miller Samuel Hill Brown?

MSHB has a fantastic reputation, and the Commercial Property team is well known for its high-quality work and diverse client base. From the moment I joined, I was struck by how supportive, collaborative and knowledgeable the team is.

There is a strong focus on developing well-rounded solicitors and giving you the opportunity to take ownership of matters while still having experienced colleagues around you. Being part of a team that encourages growth, contribution, and questions is incredibly motivating, and I am excited to continue building my career within such an environment.

Are there particular types of matters or clients you are especially interested in working with?

At this stage in my career, I am keen to experience a wide range of commercial property transactions. Whether it is a sale or purchase, or commercial leasing on behalf of landlords or tenants, I am enthusiastic about building my experience across different matter types.

I am looking forward to learning and working alongside colleagues who have handled a wide variety of transactions. Being exposed to different types of deals and diverse client needs feels invaluable, and I am excited to continue developing my skills as part of such an experienced and supportive team.

What advice would you give to current trainees considering a career in commercial property?

Strong time management and effective file organisation are essential in commercial property practice, where you are often managing multiple transactions at different stages.

Keeping files well organised — from structuring emails to maintaining clear checklists and staying on top of key dates — helps you remain in control and reduces unnecessary pressure. Commercial property work can move quickly, and clients appreciate prompt, clear communication.

Building good habits early will help trainees deliver work efficiently, confidently and professionally as they progress toward qualification in commercial property law.

Finally, if you could sum up your journey to qualification in three words, what would they be?

Challenging, Insightful and Rewarding.
