Take your first steps towards a career in law

A summer placement at Miller Samuel Hill Brown offers more than an introduction to a law firm. It is an opportunity to experience the legal profession first-hand, learn from practising solicitors and develop skills that will support your future studies and career.

As a medium-sized Scottish law firm, we provide a wide range of legal services in a friendly, supportive environment. Our teams advise individuals, families, businesses and organisations across areas including:

What will you gain from the placement?

During your placement, you will develop a clearer understanding of how a law firm operates and what working in the legal profession is really like.

You may have opportunities to:

• Gain insight into different areas of law and the work carried out by our teams
• Observe experienced solicitors and learn about their career journeys
• Undertake legal research and develop your ability to identify and present relevant information
• Assist with appropriate administrative and legal tasks
• See how legal knowledge is applied to real client matters
• Learn about professional communication, confidentiality and client care
• Build confidence in a professional working environment
• Ask questions and make connections with people working across the firm

The experience can also help you decide which areas of law interest you, strengthen future traineeship or job applications and provide useful examples to draw upon at interviews.

A genuine insight into life at a law firm

We want our summer placement students to leave with a realistic and useful understanding of legal practice.

Alongside learning about legal work, you will see the importance of collaboration, organisation, attention to detail and clear communication. You will also gain insight into the different roles and career paths that contribute to the successful running of a law firm.

Every placement will vary depending on the work being done that week, but our aim is to provide an engaging and worthwhile experience.

Who should apply?

Our summer placements are suitable for motivated individuals interested in exploring a career in law and learning more about working in a Scottish law firm.

We welcome applications from candidates who are curious, enthusiastic and ready to make the most of the opportunity. Previous legal work experience is not required.

Placement details

Summer placements:

• Last for one week
• Take place between June and August, with exact dates to be confirmed
• Are based at Miller Samuel Hill Brown
• Are unpaid
