A long-running dispute between a recording studio and owners of a nearby residential property over plans to excavate a large basement has ended in victory for the studio, reports The Telegraph.
Air Studios are based in north London and have provided a recording venue for many big names in the music business, including U2 and Sir Paul McCartney. It has also hosted many of the leading symphony orchestras, and is apparently one of the few recording studios in the area able to accommodate a full orchestra.
The studio objected to plans submitted by owners of a neighbouring property to excavate a basement in their house large enough to house a swimming pool, sauna and small cinema. The studio was concerned that the noise and vibration resulting from the construction, which could take months, would ruin the silence necessary for recording work. They claimed this would be detrimental to their business and also for the British music industry in general, with recording work going to studios abroad instead.
Their objection attracted a lot of support from the public, including 13,000 names on an online petition, and was also backed by several well-known personalities.
A four-day public planning inquiry had been scheduled to take place into the application next year, however the owners of the property concerned have now apparently withdrawn their planning application, to the relief of Air Studios.
