Female Employment Reaches Record Level

According to the latest statistics, female employment has reached a record high in Scotland with an increase of over 46,000 female employees in a year.

The latest figures show that over 71% of females in Scotland are now working, with 1,288,000 females now in employment. The average figure for female workers in the same time period in the UK was 68.1, with the gender gap in Scotland narrowing much more than across the rest of the UK.

Lower Unemployment Than UK Average

Employment figures also reveal that female unemployment has fallen to pre-recession levels with unemployment falling to as low as February 2009 records. According to statistics there were just under 28,000 women claiming job seekers allowance.

The figures come following recent statistics showing that unemployment in Scotland had fallen by 11,000 in the last three months, with Scotland’s unemployment rate being .4% lower than the UK average.

Benefit to The Economy

The Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, praised the findings on Scottish employment and the figures showing a rise in females in the workplace, He said: "A real success story over the last year is increasing female participation and the narrowing gender gap in employment rates.

"Over the last two years, the gap between male and female employment rates has narrowed in Scotland, unlike the UK - with the gap closing by 3.6 percentage points in Scotland."

He added: " As the Scottish economy grows our task is to ensure that everyone is able to benefit from that economic success.
